BECKSY & HUTCH; David dresses down in 70s cardigan for Cruise wedding.

Byline: GRAHAM BROUGH in Rome and Stephen White

STYLISH David Beckham doesn't often wear outfits that aren't much cop.

But the star looks more like Starsky yesterday as he arrives for Tom Cruise's wedding - in a cardigan like one the 70s TV detective wore.

The soccer idol, 31, sported the EUR900 designer woolly as he and Posh landed in Rome for the showbiz nuptials of the year.

The white belted top, emblazoned with horse designs, is from last season's Yves St Laurent collection. But some onlookers found the Beck cardie a rum do - with many convinced it came from a bit further back.

One said: "It looks like something you'd see in Starsky and Hutch and not what you'd expect Beckham to wear before such a wedding.

"However, if anyone can carry the look off, it's probably him."

Some 500 guests will watch Tom, 44, wed Katie Holmes, 27, in a EUR3million ceremony at a medieval castle on Lake Bracciano, 25 miles from Rome.

They will include top Hollywood names such as Will Smith and actress wife Jada Pinkett, Jennifer Lopez and husband Marc Anthony, as well as John Travolta and Jim Carrey.

Also expected are Russell Crowe, Steven Spielberg, Brooke Shields and designer Giorgio Armani. Men In Black star Will beamed:

"I just came to have a good time in Italy." Tom's ex-wife Nicole Kidman has sent a EUR3,000 vase as a gift and a touching message wishing them "a lifetime of happiness together".

The town of Bracciano has also been caught up in the excitement, with many shop windows festooned with good luck messages to the couple.

Florist Lidia Sabbatini gushed: "It's not an everyday thing to have a Hollywood star as a guest. It's all anyone is talking about."

Another shopkeeper, Iolanda Barbarani, added: "This is a beautiful thing that will make Bracciano known to the whole world."

The ceremony, to be run in keeping with Tom's Scientology beliefs, will start at 5pm local time.

A fleet of 30 cars will ferry stars from their Rome hotels to the castle.

Twice-divorced Mission: Impossible hero Tom and Katie, mum of their seven-month-old daughter Suri, will arrive by helicopter.

The wedding will be presided over by a minister wearing the eight-point Scientology silver cross.

But because the cult's rites are not recognised in Italy, Rome mayor Walter Veltroni will be on hand to oversee a civil union, while a Catholic priest will offer a blessing.
