BECHTEL TO MANAGE $140 MILLION EFFORT TO IMPROVE
LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD OPERATIONS AT PENN STATION
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Bechtel and the Long Island Rail Road are teaming up to see to it that more than 210,000 rail commuters who pass through New York's Penn Station each day are able to do so more efficiently, comfortably and safely.
A $140 million improvement project at the station is now under way, with Bechtel Civil Co. serving as construction manager. The renovation effort at one of New York's most famed landmarks is considered the centerpiece of a systemwide modernization of the nation's largest commuter rail line. During a typical rush hour, the Long Island system brings the equivalent of a 747 airliner full of people into Penn Station every 30 seconds.
By the time renovations are completed in 1995, pedestrian space at Penn Station will be increased by 20 percent. There also will be a 40 percent boost in station access points, thanks to five new stairways, three new escalators and five new elevators to serve train platforms. Other enhancements will include a master destination board, easier-to-read directional signs and a new public address system that will provide improved information about train departures. The installation of more air conditioning, an 80-foot-high glass tower at the station's entrance, and the addition of a variety of decorative elements will complete the restoration package.
"The aim will be to convert this station into a bright, inviting and comfortable terminal for the convenience of its passengers," said Bechtel Project Manager Roger Mohl.
Among the celebrities on hand for the project's groundbreaking was New York Gov. Mario Cuomo.
