BEATING THE BLUES.

A NEW drug has proved more effective than Prozac in treating depression, according to research.

The pounds 30-a-month drug agomelatine, also known as Valdoxan, was found to help 77.7 per cent of people with severe depression compared with 68.8 per cent on Prozac.

In the first week of treatment, agomelatine works for twice as many people as another antidepressant, venlafaxine. There are also fewer side-effects.

One in five Scots will face depression at some point and the World Health Organisation predict it will soon be the second biggest cause of illness worldwide.

In 2004-5, 300,000 Scots saw a doctor for depression.

As many again had the condition but did not seek medical help.
