BEACON JOURNAL PRESS OPERATORS UNION RATIFIES NEW CONTRACT

 AKRON, Ohio, July 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Beacon Journal announced today that the Press Operators had ratified a new contract with the newspaper. The Press Operators are represented by Local 42C of the Graphic Communications International Union.
 Officials notified the newspaper that a new five-year contract was ratified Saturday afternoon.
 According to Beacon Journal spokesperson Mindy Aleman, the key provisions of the Press Operators' contract include:
 -- flexibility in work assignments;
 -- elimination of restrictive work-rule practices; and
 -- establishment of a new training program.
 The contract also provides improvements for the 23 member work force, Aleman said, including:
 -- $92 in weekly increases, 15 percent over the five-year term;
 -- a $1,225 signing bonus;
 -- improvements in their pension;
 -- a new managed care health plan with employee contribution; and
 -- a change in future retirees' health plan that provides for a $5 prescription co-pay.
 The Beacon Journal had already concluded contracts with the Teamsters representing district managers, drivers and mailers; the Guild representing newsroom and maintenance employees; the paperhandlers; and the printers.
 Negotiations with the photoengravers' union are scheduled for Tuesday, July 27.
