BEACON JOURNAL PHOTOENGRAVERS RATIFY NEW CONTRACT

 AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The Beacon Journal today announced that members of Graphic Communications International Union Local No. 546-M, representing 11 staffers in the engraving department, had ratified a new contract with the newspaper.
 Union officials notified the newspaper that a new five-year contract with the photoengravers was ratified Wednesday evening.
 The key provisions of the contract include:
 -- maintaining flexibility in department staffing, and
 -- eliminating restrictive work-rule practices.
 The contract also provides improvements for the work force, including:
 -- $92 in weekly wage increases over the five-year term;
 -- a new managed care health plan with employee contributions; and
 -- a change in the health plan for future retirees that provides for a $5 prescription co-pay.
 The Beacon Journal had earlier concluded contracts with unions representing workers in circulation, the newsroom, the mailroom, composing room, pressroom, paperhandling and maintenance.
