BD5,000 loss in Manama jewellery store fire.

A JEWELLERY store in Manama went up in flames yesterday, resulting in thousands of dinars worth of damage.

The store, Mahid Jewellery, caught fire at around 9am, minutes after its owner opened shop, with two neighbouring stores also sustaining smoke damage from the blaze.

However, no injuries have been reported.

The Pakistani shop keeper, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the store, which opened in Manama Suq around 10 years ago, sustained around BD5,000 worth of damage.

He told the GDN that an investigation has been carried out into reasons behind the fire which he said could be due to a short circuit.

"I opened the shop at around 9am and stepped out for around 15 minutes," he said.

"I got a call telling me that a fire broke out and I ran back to see the entire place go up in flames.

"By the time I got there the Civil Defence team were already on the scene."

An eyewitness told the GDN that smoke could be seen emanating from the store, as firemen asked nearby shops to vacate the area.

"Some of the shops weren't open yet when I saw smoke coming out of this store," said the Bangladeshi man on condition of anonymity.

"When the fire broke out the shops nearby were just opening.

"The Civil Defence asked us to vacate the area so that no one gets hurt while they tackle the fire."

The Interior Ministry confirmed the incident on its Twitter account yesterday morning.

"The Civil Defence extinguished a fire that broke out in a shop in Manama Suq," it said.

"Two neighbouring stores sustained smoke damage because of the fire."
