BCF ink makers pick up top innovation awards at Stationers' Hall.

Sun Chemical was named Innovator of the Year 2015 at the annual Innovation Excellence Awards at Stationers' Hall. The award is a recognition of the role printing inks play in innovation across the communications and content industries.

"It's great to see so many printing ink companies recognized in what has become a major awards ceremony, promoting innovation in the communications and content industries," said Tom Bowtell of the British Coatings Federation (BCF). "As in previous years, we have been pleased to nominate printing ink companies that have entered the BCF's Sustainable Innovation Award in to the Stationers' own Awards, but this is the first time one of our members has won the overall award. Congratulations to the winners."

Sun Chemical's award was for low migration digital inks for food packaging from its Sunjet business, based in Midsomer Norton.

"This award reflects Sun's determination to innovate and lead in the adoption of digital printing in packaging," Peter Saunders, business director at Sunjet, said. "Our R&D team has created inkjet printing ink technology suitable for printing labels and flexible films for food packaging, allowing customers to benefit from the operational efficiencies and marketing opportunities provided by digital technology."

Solar Inks, another British Coatings Federation (BCF) printing inks member, also won an Innovation Excellence Award for Earthinks, a range of flexo-graphic and screen printing inks based on natural and renewable raw materials for various markets and end uses.

A third finalist from the ink sector was Fujifilm Specialty Ink Systems (SIS), which received a Certificate of Nomination for its state-of-the-art digital ink manufacturing facility. Fujifilm SIS had previously won an Innovation Excellence Award in 2014.
