BBC's cover version of Top of Pops; TELLY.

TOP of the Pops is to return to the BBC in its original time slot - with re-runs of old programmes.

The much-loved show was a viewing staple for 42 years until it was dropped in 2006 as audiences fell.

BBC4 will now repeat the huge archive of old editions, episode by episode, starting at 7.30pm on Thursday, April 7. The series begins with a show from 1976, the point at which the full archive starts and features acts as diverse as Abba, Jethro Tull and The Wurzels.

Many earlier shows, from 1964 onwards, were lost or taped over.

BBC4 controller Richard Klein said: "Let's see how it goes. The variety is extraordinary."

If the show is a success, there are enough episodes to last until around 2040.
