BAY CABLEVISION, CABLE OAKLAND GRANTED PERMISSION TO RETRANSMIT KTVU-TV

POTTSTOWN, Pa., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Customers of Cable Oakland and Bay Cablevision will continue to receive KTVU-TV over their cable systems after Oct. 6 as part of a retransmission consent agreement between the cable companies and KTVU.
Cable Oakland and Bay Cablevision and KTVU (Channel 2) have signed an interim agreement that will permit the companies to carry the broadcast station for several additional months while a final agreement is negotiated, said Debra Krzywicki, corporate vice president for The Lenfest Group, the parent company of Cable Oakland and Bay Cablevision. KTVU-TV is a Fox Broadcasting affiliate based in Oakland, Calif. The station can be seen on channel 2 in the Cable Oakland and Bay Cablevision systems.
"We are certainly happy we will be able to continue to deliver KTVU to our customers," Krzywicki said.
The 1992 Cable Act includes a provision known as retransmission consent. Commercial broadcast stations that choose retransmission consent can require payment from cable companies in exchange for granting the cable company permission to carry the station on its cable system. Cable companies must receive permission to carry a broadcast signal by midnight Oct. 5, 1993. If an agreement is not reached, a broadcaster can require a cable company to remove the station from its lineup. Any agreements reached between a cable company and a broadcaster are for a three-year period ending 1996.
Terms of the interim agreement between Cable Oakland and Bay Cablevision and KTVU are not being disclosed, Krzywicki said. "We look forward to reaching a final agreement with KTVU," she said.
Cable Oakland and Bay Cablevision serve about 120,000 customers in the Oakland and Richmond area. The companies are subsidiaries of the Pottstown-based Lenfest Group. The Lenfest Group serves more than 500,000 cable customers in the country, with about 400,000 in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
