 BAY AREA PRICES REMAINED UNCHANGED IN JUNE -- UP 3.1 PERCENT

 SAN FRANCISCO, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumer prices in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area were unchanged in June, according to Regional Commissioner Sam Hirabayashi of the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. Declines in the housing and the apparel and upkeep categories offset increases in four other major expenditure categories last month, while prices for other goods and services remained unchanged. Energy prices rose 1.9 percent last month. Excluding energy, prices in the Bay Area fell 0.1 percent. Local prices had decreased 0.2 percent in April and increased 0.2 percent in May. Consumer price index data for local areas are not seasonally adjusted.
 The Bay Area All Items Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) remained at 141.9 in June (1982-84-100), 3.1 percent above June 1991 levels. Local prices had advanced 4.3 percent and 4.6 percent in the years ending June 1990 and June 1991 respectively. So far this year, prices have increased 1.5 percent, compared to 1.9 percent in the first six months of 1991.
 Housing costs fell 0.2 percent in June as declines of 0.4 percent in the cost of shelter and 0.6 percent the index for household furnishings and operation more than offset an increase of 1.4 percent in the fuels and other utilities component. (The fuels and other utilities index includes charges for water/sewer maintenance and cable TV services). Over the past 12 months, there were advances of 2.2 percent in the cost of shelter, 3.3 percent in the index for fuels and other utilities, and 1.8 percent in the overall housing category. The local index for household furnishings and operation fell 2.9 percent in the past year.
 The apparel and upe?ep category dropped 2.4 percent in June after increasing 1.5 percent in May and falling 1.7 percent in April. Last month, price tags for men's and boys' apparel dropped 3.9 percent, women's and girls' apparel prices fell 1.6 percent, and footwear prices declined 0.3 percent. When compared to year ago levels, there were increases of 6.9 percent for men's and boys' apparel, 7.6 percent women's and girls' apparel, and 19.7 for footwear. The overall apparel and upkeep index for the Bay Area rose 8.5 percent from June 1991 to June 1992.
 The cost of transportation in the Bay Area rose 0.8 percent last month as gasoline prices jumped 4.2 percent. Local gasoline prices have now spurted 10.4 percent since April, and were up 7.1 percent when compared to June 1991. The index for public transportation, which includes airline fares, fell 1.3 percent and the index was 0.9 percent below year-ago levels. Overall transportation costs rose a moderate 2.1 percent from June 1991 to June 1992.
 Prices for food and beverages edged up 0.1 percent as grocery prices (food at home) rose 0.3 percent, the cost of eating out increased 0.1 percent, and the index for alcoholic beverages fell 0.6 percent. The cost of fruits and vegetables continued to decline, down 2.8 percent last month, 6.2 percent since April, and 10.3 percent when compared to a year ago. The overall cost of food and beverages rose 1.9 percent since June 1991.
 The cost of medical care rose 0.8 percent in June and 10.0 percent over the past year. Entertainment costs advanced 1.1 percent last month but were up a moderate 2.9 percent over-the-year. The index for other goods and services remained unchanged in June but this index, which includes personal care, was 11.5 percent above June 1991 levels.
