BAXTER AND NOVATEK ANNOUNCE DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT
DEERFIELD, Ill., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Scientific Products

Division of Baxter Healthcare Corp. and Novatek Medical, Inc. of Greenwich, Conn., today announced that Baxter will be the exclusive U.S. distributor of Novatek's Bloodloc(TM) Safety System.
Use of Bloodloc, a disposable, plastic combination lock placed on bags of blood to be used for transfusion, provides a physical barrier that prevents patients from receiving the wrong blood. Each year, due to clerical or nursing error, about 2,600 Americans receive blood intended for another patient. A patient who is given the wrong blood can experience kidney failure, shock and even death. In fact, such clerical errors are the leading cause of transfusion-related fatalities.
The Bloodloc device, which has been available to hospitals since last fall, is currently in use in a number of major medical centers throughout the country, including the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire and Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, and soon to be in use at the University of Southern California Medical Center in Los Angeles, Long Beach Memorial Hospital in California, and Baptist East Hospital in Louisville, Ky.
"We believe the Bloodloc device enhances Baxter's already very strong position as a leading supplier of high quality healthcare products to hospitals," said Darnell Martin, executive vice president of Baxter Diagnostics. "This unique new device is another example of our commitment to bring to our customers products that dramatically improve the quality of care."
The Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York conducted a study of the Bloodloc Safety System, which was published in the medical journal, "Transfusion." The study showed Bloodloc to be easy to use and highly effective in preventing blood transfusion errors.
The Bloodloc Safety System works by assigning each patient who enters the hospital a 3-letter code that is recorded on his or her wristband. The hospital's blood bank technicians set the combination lock on each bag of blood intended for that patient to the same code. At the patient's bedside, if the transfusion nurse were to receive the wrong blood, the lock would not match the code on the patient's wristband and would not open.
"We are delighted by the distribution agreement with Baxter," said Donald Heller, president of Novatek Medical, Inc. "Our need was for a far-reaching distribution of the Bloodloc Safety System. Baxter's extensive distribution network, backed by its Scientific Product Division's 350 representatives nationwide, will result in use of this life-saving safety system by more hospitals, more quickly."
The Scientific Products Division is part of Baxter Diagnostics Inc., which is a unit of Baxter Healthcare. Baxter is a leading worldwide manufacturer and marketer of health care products, systems and services. The company had 1991 revenues of $8.9 billion.
Novatek Medical, Inc. is a privately held company that identifies and brings to market new health care products that fill a clearly identified need. The Bloodloc Safety System is the company's first product.
