BAXTER, UNIHEALTH SIGN 5-YEAR, MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR AGREEMENT

BAXTER, UNIHEALTH SIGN 5-YEAR, MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR AGREEMENT
DEERFIELD, Ill., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Baxter Healthcare Corporation and UniHealth America of Burbank, Calif., announced today that they have signed a five-year, multimillion-dollar corporate agreement. Baxter sales to UniHealth's 12 medical centers are expected to exceed $200 million over the course of the contract.
The agreement makes available the entire range of products offered by Baxter, including medical and surgical supplies, intravenous fluids and diagnostic equipment. Baxter distributes, in addition to its own product line, the products of approximately 1,000 other manufacturers. The company provides more than 120,000 products to health-care providers worldwide.
"This agreement is possible because of the size and diversity of our two organizations as well as our common linkage with American Healthcare Systems (AmHS)," said Jeffrey Kirschner, president of Pacific Health Resources, UniHealth's support services division. UniHealth is a shareholder of AmHS, one of the largest health-care networks in the nation. AmHS represents more than 1,000 not-for-profit health facilities in 46 states. In 1988, Baxter and AmHS signed a five-and-a- half-year agreement under which Baxter would supply between $2.9 billion and $6.4 billion in medical and surgical products.
The UniHealth agreement is an outgrowth of the 1988 agreement between Baxter and AmHS, which offers value-added services and long-term savings designed to help hospitals cut costs and improve patient care. Such features were critical factors in choosing Baxter, Kirschner said: "The agreement provides UniHealth with the industry's broadest available range of high-quality products, and an opportunity to reduce our operating costs substantially."
Under the agreement, selected UniHealth hospitals may participate in Baxter's ValueLink(R) program, a "stockless inventory" service that offers daily deliveries of medical and surgical supplies in ready-to use packaging. The ValueLink program has helped hospitals save millions of dollars by streamlining the delivery process for medical supplies and enabling hospitals to reduce inventories.
Initially, as many as five UniHealth hospitals in California are expected to enter into ValueLink service agreements -- targeted hospitals include California Medical Center-Los Angeles, Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center, Long Beach Community Hospital, Northridge Hospital Medical Center and Santa Monica Hospital Medical Center. Each of these hospitals will have the option to relocate their inventory to Baxter's distribution facility in Ontario, California.
Over the next three to five years, the remaining seven UniHealth medical centers are expected to participate in Baxter's Enhanced Distribution Services program, which generates substantial savings for hospitals by reducing the time it takes to receive and store supplies and to process accounts payable.
"Our goal is to provide the undisputed best service available to our customers," said Darnell Martin, Baxter's group vice president, Hospital Sales and Distribution. "We're delighted to be working with UniHealth to help its hospitals meet their objectives."
The Burbank-based UniHealth America is the nonprofit parent to a network of 12 medical centers, the LifePLUS behavioral medicine program, two health maintenance organizations (CareAmerica Health Plans and a majority interest in PacifiCare Health Systems), the ElderMed America senior membership network, CliniShare's pre- and post-hospital technologies and services and UniMed America, the physician network of UniHealth.
Baxter is the leading manufacturer and marketer of health-care products, systems and services worldwide. The company had 1991 revenues of approximately $9 billion.
