BAUER PUBLISHING GROWS DESPITE DIFFICULT MARKET CONDITIONS; LEADING POSITION IN PROGRAM MAGAZINES STRENGTHENED

HAMBURG, Germany, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bauer Publishing Group (Hamburg) successfully strengthened its market share in fiscal 1992 in the highly competitive magazines market.
The group announced today (Oct. 26), a growth in sales of 1.4 percent despite the economic recession. This was markedly lower than the previous year which had brought a sales increase of 13.6 percent. Total group sales in fiscal 1992 were DM 2.88 billion (1991: DM 2.84 billion). Total assets decreased by DM 307.5 million to DM 1.317 billion (1991: DM 1.625 billion). The number of employees increased to 8,899 (1991: 8,762). As usual, the company did not announce any profit figures. Company management expects a positive development for the current fiscal year.
In the program magazine sector, the company's leading position is expected to be further strengthened. The market share at 48.3 percent (source: IVW, March 93) is equal to a paid print run of 9.87 million copies of the group's three established program magazines "auf einen Blick," "TV Hoeren und Sehen" and "Fernsehwoche," and the newly introduced "TV Klar" and "TV Movie." This figure underscores the importance of this sector for the group. With a circulation of 2,826,401, "auf einen Blick" has by now become the European market leader. In December 1991 "TV Movie" was introduced, and since then this magazine has become the most successful new venture of the last decade. Selling 1,718,919 copies every week (IVW: March 93), this magazine continues to be the best seller of its kind.
The group expects further growth in its program magazine sector with the introduction of the new "Show View" system (a quick-programming system for TV viewing).
The group has also intensified its efforts in eastern Germany. The modernization of the editorial offices and the printing presses of the Magdeburger Verlags und Druckhaus GmbH (publisher of the daily "Magdeburger Volksstimme" and the weekend "Volksstimme am Sonntag") required "large investments." Since March 1993 the Bauer Group has held a 37.6 percent interest in the TV station RTL2.
Foreign sales amounted to DM 537 million (1991: DM 522 million). The French and British subsidiaries contributed DM 250 million to these sales. Foreign business amounts to 18.7 percent (1991: 18.4 percent) of the group's total revenues. In Eastern Europe the local language editions of "Bravo" (Hungary, Poland, the former Czechoslovakia), "Wochenend" and "Tina" (Poland) and "Neue Mode" (former Czechoslovakia) are selling well. East European sales are expected to increase.
