BATTERY TECHNOLOGIES INC. HOLDS ANNUAL MEETING OF SHAREHOLDERS

RICHMOND HILL, Ontario, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- On Tuesday, June 29, Battery Technologies Inc. (BTI), developer and licensor of the new Reusable Alkaline Manganese (RAM) battery system, held its annual meeting of shareholders at the Board of Trade Club of Metropolitan Toronto. Mr. H. Neil Nichols, chairman, president and CEO of the corporation, addressed an audience of close to 300 shareholders and guests.
During the meeting's proceedings, Adam Zimmerman was elected a director for the first time. Mr. Zimmerman joins re-elected directors Wayne Hartford, Maurice Rollins, Barry Reiter, Lyman MacInnis and Mr. Nichols on BTI's board. Currently, Mr. Zimmerman is the chairman of Confederation Life Insurance Company and of the C.D. Howe Institute. From 1974 to 1992 Mr. Zimmerman held a number of senior positions with Noranda Inc. and Noranda Forest Inc. including chief executive officer from 1987 to 1991 and chairman of the board from 1987 to 1993 of Noranda Forest Inc.
During the meeting, Mr. Nichols discussed a number of recent corporate events and other issues relating to the business of BTI including: Rayovac's launch of RENEWAL batteries and chargers, a status report on other RAM licensees, future research and development objectives and the recent signing of three short-term license option agreements with corporations regarding manufacturing rights in Switzerland, Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan.
In Indonesia the optionee is the Synergy Group, headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia. Synergy consists of a diverse group of 15 separate companies whose operations include coal and manganese mining as well as food and cosmetic manufacturing. Synergy has joint ventures in property development, electronics and high-tech equipment with several government affiliated companies. Earlier this year, Synergy opened The Synergy Bank for both merchant and retail banking. Through the Synergy Group of Companies they have access to 5,000 retail-wholesale outlets for consumer products. Synergy is also pursuing licensing opportunities in Shanghai or Beijing, China.
In Taiwan, the optionee is the Bao-Chyum Investment Group, a diversified group of companies in the business of manufacturing, packaging and processing. Bao-Chyum is currently completing a US$40,000 due diligence program including market research studies and product testing. BTI has also entered into option agreements with a major international consumer products company for manufacturing rights in Switzerland and Singapore.
In addition to these option agreements, licensing discussions are ongoing with other companies in Europe, Japan, South America, Hong Kong and China.
"We are very pleased with the current level of licensing interest," commented Mr. Nichols. "Rayovac's recent announcement and the tremendous commitment they are putting behind our product will enable BTI to add several new companies to our network of international licensees this year. Rayovac's extensive advertising and promotional campaign will no doubt be extremely beneficial to upcoming product launches by other licensees. Both Phoenix Energy Corporation of Buffalo, N.Y., and RAM Batteries Canada are targeting this year's Christmas season for test marketing their respective products."
With respect to the company's future plans for research and development Mr. Nichols informed the meeting that the company was currently focusing on this subject. "With the input from our internal technical department and from our newly created International Technology Advisory Committee, BTI's future research and development objectives will be formalized over the next several weeks. While efforts will continue to improve current product performance we are looking at other opportunities that will enable BTI to address other segments of the battery market.
Under the direction of Dr. Frank Parsen and Dr. Karl Kordesch, inventor of both the single-use and reusable alkaline battery technologies, BTI has researched and developed the patented RAM battery system since 1986. To date, five license agreements have been signed by BTI with companies in Canada, Hungary, India and two in the United States.
At the present time, BTI common shares are traded under the symbol BTII on the Canadian Dealer Network.
