BATTERY TECHNOLOGIES INC. (BTI) AFFILIATE RECEIVES GRANT FOR PROGRAM

RICHMOND HILL, Ontario, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Environmental Batteries Systems (EBS), the research and development affiliate of Battery Technologies Inc. (BTI), will receive $291,000 from the Province of Ontario "Green Industry Strategy" program to develop an environmentally-friendly RAM Bundle-cell battery that is both rechargeable and mercury free.
During this two year program, EBS will develop the compact Rechargeable Alkaline Manganese dioxide-zinc Bundle-cell battery that is expected to outperform conventional lead-acid and nickel-cadmium batteries, is half the weight and free of heavy toxic metals.
Energy Minister Brian Charlton said, "With these non-toxic rechargeable batteries, we'll be able to begin to reduce the 13 tonnes of hazardous chemicals from batteries that are now dumped into landfills each year."
The bundle-cell batteries made with AA RAM batteries are being targeted for use in laptop computers, emergency lighting systems and wheelchairs. They are also viewed as a viable alternative for use in hybrid electrically-powered vehicles.
"We're proud to be on the leading edge of a technology that addresses both the environmental and energy concerns of governments, industries and consumers worldwide," said Dr. Frank Parsen, president of EBS.
BTI is licensing the manufacturing and marketing rights of the RAM technology to companies worldwide. To date five (5) licenses are in place for the production of small format RAM batteries including companies in Canada, Hungary, India and two in the US including the Rayovac Corporation. Product is expected to be available from two licensees in 1993.
Financial assistance for this project is provided by the ministry's EnerSearch Program, which encourages industries in Ontario to develop energy-saving technologies.
