BATTERY CONSORTIUM PURCHASES PROTOTYPE BATTERIES

 DETROIT, April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Ovonic Battery Company of Troy, Mich., has received a $1.4 million purchase order for prototype electric vehicle batteries from the United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC).
 Under the contract Ovonic Battery, a subsidiary of Troy-based Energy Conversion Devices (OTC: ENER), will provide USABC with prototype Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries for evaluation in electric vehicle platforms.
 The contract is in addition to an $18.5 million contract awarded to Ovonic Battery last May for the development of mid-term Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries by USABC.
 USABC is a cooperative effort between government and industry to develop advanced battery technology for subsequent application in motor vehicles. Participants in the consortium include the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The automotive partners are Chrysler (NYSE: C), Ford (NYSE: F) and General Motors (NYSE: GM). USABC is one of 10 research consortia operating under auspices of the United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR).
