BATEMAN NAMED PRESIDENT AND COO OF HARLEYSVILLE GROUP, HARLEYSVILLE MUTUAL

 HARLEYSVILLE, Pa., Nov. 30 ~PRNewswire~ -- Walter R. Bateman, CPCU, has been elected to the post of president and chief operating officer of Harleysville Group Inc. (NASDAQ: HGIC), a regional insurance holding company, and Harleysville Mutual Insurance Company, its principal stockholder.
 The appointment was announced by Bradford W. Mitchell, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the Pennsylvania-based insurance group.
 As president and chief operating officer, Bateman will continue to be responsible for all property~casualty insurance operations. At the same time, Bateman was also elected to the boards of directors of Harleysville Group and Harleysville Mutual.
 "Walt Bateman is well-qualified to assume the presidency of our organization," commented Mitchell. "His wealth of management experience in property and casualty insurance operations, his academic background and his leadership skills will be tremendous assets to Harleysville as we continue to pursue our goal of establishing a national network of regional insurers."
 Bateman, 44, joined Harleysville in 1988 as senior vice president of field operations. He was promoted to executive vice president and placed in charge of all property~casualty operations in 1991, reporting directly to Mitchell.
 Before joining Harleysville, Bateman served as a regional vice president for General Accident Insurance Company and was responsible for the operations of 12 branch offices and a managing general agent. Prior to that, he was employed for 12 years with Utica National Insurance Company in a variety of underwriting, marketing, field management and executive positions.
 A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, Bateman also holds a master's degree in business administration from Farleigh Dickinson University. He is a graduate of the College of Insurance Executive Program and the Wharton-IIA Advanced Executive Education Program for Insurance Executives, and holds the professional designations Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associate in Risk Management (ARM).
 Bateman and his wife, Jill, reside in Solebury, Pa., with their two children.
 Harleysville Group Inc. is a regional holding company for six property and casualty insurers whose marketing territory encompasses the entire East Coast. The companies include: Atlantic Insurance Company of Savannah, Connecticut Union Insurance Company, Harleysville Insurance Company of New Jersey, Huron Insurance Company, New York Casualty Insurance Company and Worcester Insurance Company. Harleysville Group also manages the operations of Berkshire Mutual Insurance Group, the financial results of which are not consolidated into Harleysville Group. Harleysville Group's property~casualty subsidiaries are rated A+ (Superior) by the A.M. Best Company.
