BASEBALL GREAT CARL YASTRZEMSKI PRESENTS CHECK TO
HURRICANE ANDREW FUND DURING HOME SHOPPING APPEARANCE
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Home Shopping Network Inc. (NYSE: HSN) announced today that former Boston Red Sox slugger Carl Yastrzmenski presented a check for $20,000 to the United Way Hurricane Relief Fund last night during his appearance on Home Shopping's memorabilia show, Sports Emporium. The relief fund was established to channel contributions directly to the victims of Hurricane Andrew.
Yastrzemski said he was moved by the plight of the thousands of Floridians devastated by the hurricane. "I know Home Shopping co- sponsored a telethon to benefit storm victims, so I thought my appearance on the Club would be a great time for me to join the millions of other Americans who contributed to relief efforts. I'm pleased to be able to help the people of south Florida restore their communities and homes. I'm a Florida homeowner and consider myself fortunate to have been spared the wrath of Hurricane Andrew."
Yastrzemski appeared on Home Shopping Club to promote sales of sports collectible and memorabilia items. The veteran American Leaguer retired from baseball in 1983 after a remarkable 23-year career with the Red Sox. He holds batting titles for 1963, 1967, and 1968 and was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1989.
Jim Lawless, Club president, said, "We are glad to have Carl with us at the Club and proud that he chose to make his contribution to the Hurricane Andrew relief effort on our show."
