BASE TEN SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES PRELIMINARY 1991 RESULTS
TRENTON, N.J., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Base Ten Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: BASEA) today announced the following:
Economic pressures have stimulated managements across the country to restructure their organizations and to emphasize new product development. We are experiencing the same pressures and have continued substantial efforts to develop new products. In keeping with our plan to lower operating costs, we have reduced our staff by 20 percent in the fourth quarter and have closed our U.K. facility. Our early estimate indicates a pretax loss of approximately $11.3 million for 1991, subject to completion of our audit which is scheduled for the middle of December. In addition the Company will seek waivers of certain covenants in its bank loan agreements. Our audited 1991 Annual Report and 10-K will be published and mailed to you in early 1992.
New product development is concentrating on radio frequency identification systems which can be used to identify the contents of toxic waste, nuclear waste, or chemical containers using electronic means instead of paper documents. This significantly increases the handling safety and reduces the associated costs. There are many other potential applications including the identification of residential waste containers for a pay-by-weight garbage collection program, the continuous recording of seriously ill patient treatment programs using a device carried by the patient, and the physical location of all patients within a hospital. We believe the market for such applications is extremely large and growing and we are pursuing these opportunities using the new technology we have developed.
Our new software program, intended to rapidly calculate the estimated risk of Down's syndrome or spina bifida in pregnant women, is being tested at the Hershey Medical Center. The benefit of this system will be to reduce the cost of testing making it more available to millions of pregnant women. The high reliability power systems we have developed for commercial satellites, which sell for over $100,000 each, are being readied for qualification testing and are being offered to similar programs. We are also developing new communications products for the rapidly growing field of secure data transmission. The development of our Barrel Pressure Indicator for the sporting gun enthusiast is not complete and we still have additional development work to be accomplished.
To increase our manufacturing productivity in Trenton we have brought in an outstanding new manager, Randall Sullivan, who comes to us from the Ford Motor Company where he was a manufacturing manager producing engine computers. To expedite and increase our bookings in Trenton, we have added three new sales and marketing managers. Rhona Kasper, former director of corporate development at Amtech, is responsible for our radio frequency identification systems and medical software sales. Edward Youmans, previously a sales manager at Smith's Industries, is now responsible for our airborne product sales. Donald Wilson, from Unysis Corp., will take over our Secure Communication sales efforts.
We are not the same Company we were a few months ago. We are becoming a diversified technology company. Future earnings remain dependent upon the anticipated receipt of bookings over the next several months. We believe, however, that we have taken strong action and will continue to look for other ways to improve.
