BART BOARD SELECTS MK TO BUILD 80 NEW TRANSIT CARS
BOISE, Idaho March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Morrison Knudsen Corp. (MK) (NYSE: MRN) announced that the board of directors of the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) voted today to select MK to manufacture 80 new transit cars for the San Francisco Bay Area commuter system.
Selection of MK was recommended to the board by the BART staff that determined MK was the best qualified bidder with a superior technical rating, the lowest price and highest overall evaluation score. C. Itoh/Kinki Sharyo and Mitsui/Kawasaki were MK's major competitors.
The value of the base contract is $141.6 million and there are options for additional cars that could bring total production to 250 vehicles.
William J. Agee, MK chairman and chief executive officer, said the cars will be manufactured at an industrial facility MK will establish in the Bay Area. The first car will be delivered to BART in late 1994 and the work is scheduled for completion in late 1995.
"Morrison Knudsen has other contracts to build rail cars for transit systems serving the Chicago and New York City regions," Agee noted. "This contract with BART underscores our clear corporate commitment to the American transit industry," he emphasized, "as well as to reaffirm our leadership role in forging a rail car manufacturing renaissance in our country."
MK's Bay Area facility will also be used to manufacture cars for an 88-car, $155-million order the company received from the California Department of Transportation in February.
MK also is establishing a transit-car manufacturing facility in Chicago. The company recently received a 313-car, $380-million contract from Metra, a commuter rail system serving northeastern Illinois. The Bay Area and Chicago facilities and an existing facility in Hornell, N.Y., position MK to serve transit-car agencies from coast to coast and internationally.
Morrison Knudsen Corp. is an international company serving the environmental, industrial process, power and transportation markets with complete development, design/engineering, construction, operating and financial services.
