    BARRINGER ANNOUNCES IONSCAN R&D CONTRACTS TOTALLING $1,600,000
    SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J., Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Barringer Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: BARR), today announced that its Canadian subsidiary, Barringer Research Ltd., has been awarded two contracts for the further development of its IONSCAN drug and explosives detector, having a combined value of $1,600,000.
    The first program, sponsored by the Canadian Defense Industry Research Program (DIRP), is for the further development of IONSCAN explosives detection capabilities, particularly as they apply to military and special security applications.  The total program is $1,350,000.  The first phase of this program, totalling $300,000, will begin immediately.  Secondary phases are subject to further approvals based upon the outcome of the initial phase.
    The second program is for drug interdiction and is sponsored by the U.S. Defense Advanced Projects Agency (DARPA) and totals $250,000. Within this program further research will be undertaken into the detection of contraband in closed cargo containers, with the subsequent development of improved IONSCAN detectors for rapid container screening.
