BARNETT TO AWARD 54 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Barnett will award college scholarships to 54 high school students during the Barnett Academic Competition for Excellence (ACE) to be held April 22-24 at Walt Disney World.
As the primary corporate sponsor, Barnett will contribute $63,000 to fund the scholarships. Students on first-place teams will receive $1,800 each; students on second-place teams will receive $1,000 each; and students on third-place teams will each receive $700. Barnett increased its contribution from $36,000 to $63,000 last year in response to the state of Florida's budget restrictions.
The goal of ACE is to provide a prestigious academic competition and to recognize the state's academically talented high school students. The '93 tournament will mark the sixth year Barnett has sponsored the event.
ACE is an intense academic tournament in which approximately 50 Florida districts compete in three divisions. Students are asked questions in mathematics, science, English, social studies, the fine arts, foreign language and computer science. Some questions are cross- disciplined, such as a science question asked in a foreign language.
Individual Barnett banks also provide support by sponsoring local teams. This support ranges from monetary contributions for travel to the state tournament, team shirts and recognition breakfasts to various levels of employee volunteerism.
With $39 billion in assets and 635 offices in Florida and Georgia, Barnett is Florida's leading financial institution and the 17th-largest in the United States. Its stock (BBI) is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
NOTE: To monitor a team's progress during the tournament, call the press room at 407-560-8642, 407-560-8643, or 407-560-8644.
