BARNETT TO AWARD 54 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- At a time when state funding of education is declining, Barnett is increasing its contributions to fund college scholarships for a prestigious statewide academic tournament.
As the major corporate sponsor of the Barnett Bank Academic Competition for Excellence (ACE), Florida's leading banking company will award $63,000 in college scholarships to 54 high school students. This is an increase $27,000 from the company's annual contribution during the past five years.
The additional money will enable students on the third-place teams to receive scholarships for the first time. Students on first-place teams will receive $1,800 each; students on second-place teams will receive $1,000 each; and students on third place teams will each receive $700.
"Private sector companies must take responsibility to support and enhance education at a time when governmental agencies are cutting back," said Allen Lastinger, president and chief operating officer of Barnett Banks, Inc. (NYSE: BBI). Barnett has donated more than $4 million to education during the past five years.
The ACE, previously called the Florida High School Academic Tournament, will be held April 30 through May 2 at Walt Disney World. The tournament is an intense academic competition in which approximately 50 Florida districts compete in three divisions. Students are asked questions in the areas of mathematics, science, English, social studies, the fine arts, foreign language and computer science. Some questions are cross-disciplined, such as a science question asked in a foreign language.
The goal of the tournament is to provide a prestigious academic competition and to recognize the state's academically talented high school students. The '92 tournament will mark the fifth year Barnett has sponsored the tournament.
With $32.3 billion in assets and 593 offices in Florida and Georgia, Barnett is the leading financial institution in Florida and the 21st-largest in the United States. The company's stock (BBI) is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
