BARNETT OPENS CHALLENGE FUND TO CORPORATE PARTNERS

BARNETT OPENS CHALLENGE FUND TO CORPORATE PARTNERS
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Barnett Banks, Inc.

(NYSE: BBI) announced today that it is opening its matching hurricane disaster relief fund to other corporations or foundations who want to add matching commitments of at least $100,000. The corporate challenge comes as the result of a call from the Ethel and W. George Kennedy Family Foundation a Miami-based foundation, who wished to join Barnett's effort by adding $100,000 to the current $500,000 in the fund. This means donations will now be matched up to $600,000, and this number could grow as other corporations join the challenge.
Barnett established the Barnett/Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund -- a dollar-for-dollar matching-fund on Aug. 26 to aid victims of Hurricane Andrew. In addition to Barnett's initial $100,000 contribution, $80,000 has been collected and matched.
To contribute, Hurricane Andrew relief checks must be made payable to:
Barnett-Florida Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund
 c/o Barnett Banks, Inc.
 P.O. Box 44300
 Jacksonville, FL 32231-4300
The money goes into an account for the Red Cross of Florida to use for the purchase of food, clothing, personal items and medical supplies for hurricane victims. Because Barnett has already established an administrative procedure for handling and processing the donations, any corporations who wish to join the fund need only notify James Covington at 904-791-7730, to make their commitment and have their names added to the fund.
With $32.4 billion in assets and 597 offices in Florida and Georgia, Barnett Banks, Inc. is Florida's leading financial institution, and the 18th-largest in the United States. Its stock (BBI) is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
