BARNETT NAMED ONE OF THE NATION'S TOP 10 COMPANIES FOR WORKING MOTHERS

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Barnett Banks, Inc. (NYSE: BBI) is the only Florida-based company to be named one of the 10 Best Companies for Working Women in 1993 by Working Mother magazine. Barnett was also named among the top 100 companies in the United States in 1992. The company was especially commended this year for its expansion of child care benefits, advancement opportunities and compensation package.
The Working Mother 100, published in the October issue of Working Mother, are the country's most innovative and advanced firms in support of working families. Barnett and the other companies are selected and ranked in categories using the following criteria: support for child care, opportunities for women to advance, pay and family-friendly benefits.
"Barnett is committed to our employees and to being the employer of choice in our communities," said Paul T. Kerins, Barnett's chief human resources executive. "We understand the business value in offering these types of benefits to attract talented workers. By helping our employees balance the demands of work and family, Barnett benefits as well."
"In record numbers, American companies are creating a workplace where people thrive, both as employees and as parents," said Judsen Culbreth, editor in chief of Working Mother. "Businesses are working harder than ever to develop diverse programs that serve today's work force and the work force of tomorrow."
Barnett operates two on-site, state-of-the-art child care centers in Jacksonville and Pasco County, caring for more than 300 children. Both centers are staffed by experts in child development and are geared to deliver high-quality infant, toddler and preschool care. A third child care center is being built in Dade County and is expected to care for 150 children of employees.
Barnett is also pursuing other child care initiatives, such as sick- child care in Tampa. In Sarasota and Pinellas County, Barnett currently subsidizes sick-child care expenses for employees using designated hospital-based centers or licensed day care centers. In addition, Barnett has joined other companies to help create new child care programs throughout the state.
Barnett was also one of the first companies in the U.S. to open an on-site school for children of Barnett employees. The school, located in the Barnett Office Park in Jacksonville, is presently open to children in kindergarten and first grade and will expand to include second grade by 1994. A doctor's office is also located on the site, providing ease of access to medical facilities for working parents.
Barnett also offers comprehensive medical and disability leave plans, stock purchase, savings plans and job sharing for employees.
With $37 billion in assets and 632 offices in Florida and Georgia, Barnett Banks, Inc. is the leading financial institution in Florida and the 19th-largest in the United States. The company's stock (BBI) is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
