BARNETT BANK RECEIVES THE UNITED WAY OF FLORIDA'S 1993 COMMUNITY COMMITMENT AWARD

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Way of Florida today presented Barnett Banks, Inc. (NYSE: BBI) with its 1993 Community Commitment Award. The award recognizes Barnett's exemplary statewide United Way campaign, its corporate commitment and the commitment of Barnett employees throughout Florida to generously and effectively support local United Way efforts to help their neighbors in need.
In presenting the award, United Way of Florida Chairman of the Board Jim Moseley said, "The efforts of Barnett, from its corporate headquarters in Jacksonville to its 590 offices and more than 18,000 employees around Florida, to assist the needy in their local areas are exceptional."
Barnett received special recognition this year because it raised almost $2 million statewide in 1992 to help needy Floridians through the United Way. With a per capita giving (including corporate and employee gifts) of $99.06, Barnett ranks as the largest United Way supporter among banks in Florida.
In addition to monetary support, Barnett employees annually contribute thousands of hours to raising the quality of life in their communities by performing volunteer work and participating on the boards of directors of numerous charities. Barnett's strong support of the United Way traces back to 1936, and continues today through leadership of United Way community campaigns and production of campaign support materials, such as video and pledge cards which make the campaign more meaningful for its employees.
"We are grateful for this recognition of our employees' efforts to support deserving organizations working to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve," said Charles E. Rice, Barnett chairman and chief executive officer. "It is our employees' generosity and concern for their communities that made this award possible."
Although Barnett is Florida's largest banking company and the 18th largest in the United States with $38 billion in assets, its commitment to the communities it serves goes even further -- beyond its United Way efforts -- to community efforts at every level. Barnett is highly involved with Chambers of Commerce, symphonies, community festivals and a variety of other charitable/community works outside the organization. Through their far-reaching and on-going efforts, Barnett and its employees raise the quality of life in all communities they serve. It is because of those efforts that the United Way of Florida presented Barnett Banks, Inc. with its Community Commitment Award this year.
