BARNETT AWARDS COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS TO 54 STUDENTS

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Barnett Bank presented $63,000 in college scholarships to 54 high school students as sponsor of the Barnett Bank Academic Competition for Excellence (ACE), held at Walt Disney World, Orlando, Fla., April 22-24.
This year's first-place teams were from Duval, St. Lucie and DeSoto counties; each team member received an $1,800 scholarship. Second-place teams were from Leon, Bay and Suwannee counties; each team member received a $1,000 scholarship. Third-place teams were from Orange, Collier and Walton counties; each team member received a $700 scholarship. The '93 tournament marks the sixth year Barnett has sponsored the event.
The competition is an academic "quiz bowl" for high school students. Teams representing 52 of Florida's 67 school districts competed in the areas of mathematics, science, English, social studies, the fine arts, foreign language and computer science.
Teams are placed into three divisions, based on school enrollment size. Previously, only first- and second-place team members in each division received scholarships. Starting in 1992, Barnett added scholarships for members of the third-place teams in each division, which increased the company's contribution from $36,000 to $63,000.
With $38 billion in assets and 634 offices in Florida and Georgia, Barnett Banks, Inc. (NYSE: BBI) is the leading financial institution in Florida and the 18th-largest in the United States. The company's stock (BBI) is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
