BARNETT ANNOUNCES HURRICANE ANDREW RELIEF EFFORTS

BARNETT ANNOUNCES HURRICANE ANDREW RELIEF EFFORTS
MIAMI, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Barnett Banks, Inc. (NYSE: BBI) will

provide $1 billion in Hurricane Andrew relief loans, set up a Red Cross donation match-fund of $500,000 and provide other customer and employee services in the South Florida disaster area.
"Our key concern is to serve our customers and assist our employees," said Allen Lastinger, Barnett's president.
 Barnett's Hurricane Andrew program will:
-- Provide daily reports of offices and ATMs which are operating in Dade County.
 -- Commit $1 billion in disaster-relief lending.
-- Establish a statewide Red Cross fund so that residents who wish may donate to the relief effort. Barnett will match all contributions dollar-for-dollar up to $500,000.
-- Provide a 60-day payment extension on all types of monthly payment loans in good standing -- credit card, creditline, installment, mortgage and commercial. The company will also establish toll-free hotlines for mortgage, retail and commercial customers in the disaster areas to address loan restructuring needs.
-- Extend office hours as soon as civil authorities permit at selected locations.
-- Waive ATM fees for customers who use non-Barnett ATMs, to reduce the need for travel.
-- Provide immediate credit on insurance checks up to $5,000 for Barnett customers.
-- Provide reduced-rate home improvement loans without fees, up to $25,000.
 For employees, the company will:
-- Provide on-site daycare at its Miami Lakes operations center.
-- Provide full pay to National Guardsman called up for hurricane duty.
-- Assist employees to locate temporary housing.
-- Bring employees from other parts of the state to help in South Florida locations.
Until other hotlines are established, customers may obtain account information through Barnett's telebanking number (1-800-242-2007; 1-800-848-0009; 1-800-848-0003).
Damage assessment teams are surveying all of Dade's 42 locations. At least nine have sustained serious damage. Approximately five were operational during the day. Others were being fitted with auxiliary generators. Security was being provided as sites which required it. In Monroe and Collier counties, locations appeared to have sustained minimal damage. In Lee, Broward and Palm Beach counties service was virtually normal.
"We will announce additional Dade locations as they become available," said Jim Mondello, Barnett's South Region Executive.
With $32.4 billion in assets and 597 offices in Florida and Georgia, Barnett Banks, Inc., is Florida's leading financial institution, and the 18th largest in the United States. Its stock (BBI) is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
