BARNETT AND GTE TEAM UP TO CREATE IMAGING-BASED INFORMATION SYSTEMS
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Barnett Technologies, Inc. and GTE Vantage Solutions have joined forces to create and implement imaging-based information systems that promise to dramatically improve customer access to data and streamline bank processing operations.
Under the terms of the agreement, Barnett Technologies, the operations and information systems affiliate of Barnett Banks, Inc., (NYSE: BBI) will combine its banking industry acumen with GTE's technological expertise to create image-technology based information systems that dramatically reduce the time required to access data and produce major improvements in customer service. These new systems will supplant current text and data information systems, thus giving both banks and customers greater access to records.
"Image technology is going to help us improve our distribution system and make information available more quickly, effectively and efficiently," explained Jonathan Palmer, chairman and chief executive officer of Barnett Technologies. "The benefit to customers will be better access to information at a lower cost."
Among the many potential uses for imaging-based technology, is home computer access to actual images of bank customers' checks. Customers would be able to retrieve, for example, copies of checks, complete with signatures and endorsements, and receive a paper copy via telecopier (fax machine). Similarly, banks could process images of supporting documentation to mortgage and loan applications, reducing dramatically the processing time. "We need to give customers what they want, when they want it, where they want it," said Palmer.
In addition to increased customer responsiveness, Barnett Technologies plans to market the new imaging-based technology to correspondent banks and other financial institutions. "We plan to make the image solutions we develop available to others," explained Palmer.
In selecting GTE Vantage Solutions, Barnett Technologies concluded the GTE subsidiary is a leader in imaging technology. "They, quite simply, are more advanced in the area than any of the other companies we investigated,"
explained Palmer. - With $32.3 billion in assets and 593 offices in Florida and

Georgia, Barnett Banks, Inc. is Florida's leading banking company and the 21st-largest in the United States. Its stock (BBI) is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
