BARNETT AND CHN TO OFFER ELECTRONIC SERVICES TO PHYSICIANS

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Barnett Bank (NYSE: BBI) and Cooperative Healthcare Network (CHN) will begin offering a financial transaction service for physicians through a pilot program in Highlands and Pinellas counties in late July.
Through CHN's StatLink(TM), an electronic data interchange (EDI) software service, physicians will be able to automate many functions which are currently done manually, including electronic claims, submissions, claims status and eligibility. In addition, physicians who are Barnett customers will also have access to financial services, including on-line banking and credit card processing services.
"This new service integrates banking services with electronic payments systems, enhancing the flow of physician's accounts receivables, a process usually delayed by a variety of administrative inefficiencies," explained Wade Nield, health care segment manager for Barnett Banks, Inc. "Electronic capabilities like these will enable physicians to spend less time managing information and more time practicing medicine," he said.
"As more insurance companies begin to provide physicians payments through electronic funds transfer, it is essential that physicians' staffs are able to verify the receipt of payment prior to updating their receivables," said CHN President and CEO Joe Bigley. "And as employers shift the costs of copayments and deductibles, more patients will consider using credit cards to pay for health care services."
CHN, a BellSouth company located in Alpharetta, Ga., is the developer of StatLink. Its product features include electronic all- payor insurance claim submission, eligibility verification, pre- admission certification, HMO and other managed care referral processing, claims status reporting, electronic remittance advice, financial transactions and medical information services. As part of its financial transactions, the service also offers credit card processing. CHN offers StatLink as a stand alone system or as an interface to physicians' office management system.
With $38 billion in assets and 633 offices in Florida and Georgia, Barnett Banks, Inc. is the leading financial institution in Florida and the 18th-largest in the United States. The company's stock (BBI) is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
