BARNETT ADDS TO TELEPHONE BANKING SERVICES

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Have trouble keeping track of withdrawals from ATM machines because your spouse carries the checkbook? Need to know how much you have run up on the credit card this month? Or would you like to be able to order new checks any time of the day or night?
New services now available through Barnett Bank's automated response telephone system (B.A.R.T.) cover all of these everyday banking desires.
Starting this month, Barnett customers can obtain the last five ATM transactions, up-to-date information on their credit card activity and current payment requirements. They can also order checks and get all the necessary information to balance their checking accounts.
"Barnett's goal is to deliver banking services whenever and wherever the customer wants," said Catherine Corby, Barnett's director of Alternative Delivery Systems. "Our telebanking system has proved tremendously popular with customers. About one in four now use the system."
The telebanking system receives nearly 2.5 million calls each month, double the amount of only one year ago. This month, the system received its 50 millionth call since being initiated in 1988. Corby said that Barnett's telebanking system receives several times as many calls as other institutions its size.
The phone number is in the local telephone book. Customers establish a secret code, much like at an ATM machine, to insure that others cannot access their account information.
Many customers already use the service to determine which checks have cleared and their up-to-the-minute available balance. The automated telephone service provides an easy way for customers to obtain account information without having to go to the bank. And by reducing the number of routine calls to Barnett banking offices, it allows Barnett bankers to provide better face-to-face service.
"Barnett already has the most convenient locations for banking in our markets," Corby said. "With the development of telebanking and other alternative ways of delivering services, we will extend an increasing variety of services to the office, home or any other location equipped with a telephone."
With $39 billion in assets and 733 offices in Florida and Georgia, Barnett is Florida's leading financial institution and the 18th-largest in the United States. Its stock (BBI) is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
