BARNETT, RED CROSS ESTABLISH HURRICANE CHALLENGE FUND JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Barnett Banks, Inc.
(NYSE: BBI) announced today it will provide $100,000 in 'seed' money for the "Barnett-Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund" for Hurricane Andrew relief. The money is the first of a $500,000 matching-fund commitment Barnett has made to assist in the South Florida disaster relief effort.
"This can result in a $1 million relief fund if donors respond as I think they will," said Charles E. Rice, Barnett's chairman. Barnett established the fund to encourage others who wish to help in the aftermath of the devastating storm. Florida's largest banking organization will match all donations to the fund on a dollar-for-dollar basis up to $500,000. To contribute, Hurricane Andrew relief checks should be made payable to: Barnett-Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund c/o Barnett Banks, Inc. P.O. Box 44300 Jacksonville, Fla. 32231-4300 Or, checks may be delivered to Barnett offices or Red Cross chapter offices anywhere in the state. Donations will be used to provide emergency relief to the victims of Hurricane Andrew including clothing, food, personal items and medical needs. All disaster assistance provided is free, a gift from the American people.
