BARNES & NOBLE OPENS FIRST TEXAS BOOKSTORE; STORE OFFERS TREMENDOUS SELECTION OF BOOKS AND PERIODICALS, MUSIC AND CAFE

DALLAS, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Barnes & Noble, one of the world's largest bookselling organizations, has opened its first Texas bookstore, the company announced today.
Located at 14999 Preston Road, the Dallas Barnes & Noble offers a wide-ranging book selection in excess of 150,000 volumes. A large selection of magazines and newspapers from across the country and around the world -- totaling 1,000 -- will be offered daily.
Barnes & Noble has long been interested in opening a store to serve the needs of Dallas' literary community. Comments Jim Kirk, Regional Director, "We're very proud to be a member of the Dallas community. We've gone to great lengths to create a very special store -- one that offers an unparalleled selection in a distinctive setting."
The 25,000-square-foot store's classic design is accented by a hunter green decor with walnut stained shelves and gold leaf William Morris wallpaper. The store's focal point is its stone rotunda, which features eight fossilized limestone columns, each embedded with a custom-made brass Star of Texas. Additionally, the granite entranceway is inlaid with a large Star of Texas. A rare antique, the Cafe's 25-foot bar was originally housed in a turn-of-the-century hotel.
Custom-tailored, the library-like setting includes chairs, tables, and wide aisles, along with easily accessible, clearly marked shelves. Two elephant pediments are at the entrance of the impressive 3,000- square-foot children's section, which features illustrations of children's favorite characters complemented by blonde wood. The overall effect is charming and inviting.
The premier piece in a series of in-store artists' exhibits, entitled "Wild Horses and Reckless Men," is on display in the store's rotunda. The work is a 3-foot bronze sculpture by nationally renowned artist Grant Speed, and is on loan from the Texas Art Gallery. The flexible schedule of rotating exhibits will highlight the work of local artists, recognized for their distinguished work in a variety of mediums.
Comments Store Manager John Walker, "This store represents Barnes & Noble's commitment to the people of Texas." He adds, "We have gone to great lengths to design a showcase store for the community. I am confident our store will continue Barnes & Noble's proud heritage and tradition of excellence in bookselling."
Two of the store's greatest assets are its Barnes & Noble Cafe, and Premier Music section. The Cafe serves Starbucks' delicious coffees, espressos and lattes exclusively, local baked goods and small sandwiches. The 2,500-square-foot cafe, which seats 50, offers both indoor and outdoor patio seating. The Premier Music section features recent adult contemporary, classical, jazz, opera and pop releases, as well as a wide selection of classics on compact disc and cassette.
The store kicks off a grand opening celebration on Thursday, Nov. 18, with a benefit for the Family Place. (The Family Place is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting victims of domestic violence with a 24-hour hotline, support groups and family guidance.) A variety of literary and cultural events, including discussion groups and, for children, story hours, will be held throughout the year.
The Dallas Barnes & Noble Bookstore is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m..
