BARCELONA GAMES TO USHER IN NEW ERA OF SPORTS TIMING
MAHWAH, N.J., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The 1992 Olympic Summer Games will mark a new era in sports timing and set a precedent for the way athletic events are recorded in the 21st century.
Use of ultra high-tech computer-based technology that employs a process called "slit video," will render the familiar "photo finish" obsolete. And, whereas the "photo finish" would cause a delay in determining official results, the new process will provide almost instantaneous results to judges and spectators worldwide.
Developed by Seiko and introduced at the 1991 World Track and Field Championships (where it recorded the fastest 100-meter race in history), "slit video" features a High Definition Television (HDTV) video to record the precise time and image of competitors as they cross the finish line. All finishers are depicted on the image corresponding to how far back in time they were from the winner.
Vertical lines, spaced apart by 1/100 second intervals, are superimposed on the image, giving the final "shot" not only a "real- time" perspective, but incredible accuracy. The resulting picture is displayed to judges on a HDTV monitor, offering unprecedented clarity and permitting instant enlargement on critical areas.
Slit video is part of Seiko's Total Sports Operation System that will be in use for 25 events in Barcelona. Among the system's other features: an ability to immediately detect false starts; providing instantaneous measurement on wind factors; and use of an infrared bean similar to those used by cameras with automatic focus, to measure distances in events such as the long jump, triple jump, shot put, hammer throw, discus and javelin.
