BANTA REPORTS STELLAR SECOND QUARTER RESULTS

MENASHA, Wis., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Banta Corporation (NASDAQ: BNTA) established new all-time highs for second quarter sales and earnings during the period ended June (July 3) 1993. Chairman Calvin W. Aurand, Jr. says the corporation's product diversity, market niche focus and employee dedication to continuous improvement provided the foundation for the continued growth.
Net earnings for the second quarter were $10.5 million, 22 percent above the record $8.6 million earned during the second quarter of 1992. Earnings per share were 52 cents, 21 percent above last year's 43 cents. The earnings per share for both the three- and six-month periods have been adjusted for the three-for-two stock split that occurred Apr. 30, 1993. Sales reached $165.9 million, 9 percent higher than the $151.8 million reported for the second quarter of 1992.
For the six-month period ended June 1993, net earnings were $18.8 million (93 cents per share), 18 percent higher than the $15.9 million (80 cents per share) earned during the first half of 1992. Sales increased 8 percent during 1993's first six months, reaching $328.0 million compared with last year's $304.3 million.
Aurand notes especially strong performance was turned in by the direct mail and book businesses. "For the second consecutive quarter our Direct Marketing Group was the top sales gainer, registering a high double-digit increase over the same period last year," says Aurand. "Softcover books were a close second, benefiting from stronger seasonal activity in educational products, and manuals for the computer software and hardware markets."
He pointed out that special-interest magazine volume continued to rise, helped by market share gains and increased capacity provided by the corporation's new magazine production plant in Missouri. Consumer catalogs experienced lower sales and flat production activity due to the sluggish economy and variations in paper volume. The single-use products operation had sales comparable to last year, while the point-of- purchase unit saw volume decline from its record 1992 second quarter.
Several new presses were being installed at the end of the quarter, which Aurand notes will provide much needed capacity in the third quarter. The press installations were in the Direct Marketing, Catalog, and Information Services groups.
"We're optimistic about the remainder of 1993," says Aurand. "Our confidence, however, is tempered by the uncertain economy. If business conditions and consumer confidence deteriorate, our present growth momentum could suffer. If, on the other hand, the economy continues to moderately improve and we experience our normal seasonal uptick in the catalog and commercial markets, 1993 could become another record year for Banta."
