 BANTA REPORTS RECORD RESULTS
MENASHA, Wis., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Banta Corporation

(NASDAQ: BNTA) achieved all-time highs in sales and earnings during the second quarter of 1992. Chairman Calvin W. Aurand, Jr. says most of the corporation's product groups gained market share during the quarter and plants generally operated more efficiently as a result of past capital investments.
For the three months ended June 1992, net earnings were $8.6 million, a 22 percent increase over the $7.1 million earned during the same period in 1991. Earnings per share were 65 cents, 20 percent higher than the 54 cents reported for 1991's second quarter. Sales for the quarter were $151.8 million, a 12 percent increase over last year's $135.6 million.
For the six-month period ended June 1992, net earnings were $15.9 million ($1.20 per share), 30 percent higher than the $12.2 million (94 cents per share) earned during the first half of 1991. Sales increased 11 percent during 1992's first six months, reaching $304.3 million compared with last year's $274.0 million.
Chairman Aurand notes that two units performed especially well during the quarter: KCS Industries Inc., a Milwaukee-based subsidiary that manufactures point-of-purchase signs and displays, product labels and postage stamps; and the corporation's catalog group. "KCS Industries followed up its impressive first quarter performance by recording significant gains across its product lines," says Aurand. "Our consumer catalog operations experienced a 15 percent increase in volume and more uniform production activity created manufacturing efficiencies."
The corporation's magazine group, which continued to gain market share, benefited from an overall increase in volume and magazine page counts. Banta's single-use products business extended its impressive streak of higher quarterly results and the prepress units reported improved results due to the educational textbook adoption process.
Aurand notes that Banta's capabilities to serve the diverse needs of educational publishers proved valuable during the adoption process. "While school budget cutbacks reduced demand for supplemental educational materials, our traditional printing services continued strong and helped produce results comparable to last year," he says.
"Our outlook for the second half of the year remains optimistic," adds Aurand. "Absent a further weakening in the economy, we expect that our full-year results will be greatly improved over 1991."
