BANTA REPORTS ALL-TIME HIGHS IN SALES AND EARNINGS

MENASHA, Wis., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Banta Corporation (NASDAQ: BNTA) achieved record sales and earnings during 1992. The company reported business momentum that began in the fourth quarter of 1991 continued to build throughout 1992 and remained strong during the final quarter of the year.
For the fourth quarter, net earnings were $9.1 million, a 21 percent increase over the $7.5 million earned during the same period in 1991. Earnings per share were 68 cents, 19 percent higher than the 57 cents reported last year. Sales for the fourth quarter reached $166.9 million, a 13 percent increase over 1991's $147.5 million.
For the year, net earnings from continuing operations were $35.7 million ($2.68 per share), 26 percent higher than the $28.2 million ($2.16 per share) earned in 1991. 1992 sales increased 13 percent, reaching $637.4 million compared with last year's $565.5 million. Net earnings of $35.7 million for 1992 compares with $20.6 million ($1.58 per share) earned last year, which included a $7.6 million provision for the loss on the sale of the Banta Ventures, Inc. subsidiary.
Chairman Calvin W. Aurand, Jr. says results for all four quarters of 1992 were consistently above their corresponding year-ago periods. "In the fourth quarter, increased volume in catalogs created excellent plant utilization and efficiencies," explains Aurand, "and general books, magazines, and direct marketing materials continued to reap the benefits of gains in market share." Included in the fourth quarter was a LIFO credit, which increased earnings 4 cents per share.
"For the full year, all of our major product groups improved upon their 1991 earnings, exclusive of units involved with plant relocations," notes Aurand. "Sales also increased for all groups, with special strength in catalogs and more modest growth in educational materials."
Computer software manuals benefited from the first full year of Bushman Press' operation as a Banta subsidiary, according to Aurand. The point-of-purchase display and postage stamp businesses operated at record pace in 1992, and Banta's single-use products subsidiary continued its strong year-to-year pattern of growth.
Banta Corporation will adopt the new accounting requirements for postretirement health care benefits on a fuhe outlook for 1993 remains upbeat, d ue in large part to Banta's past investments in plants, equipment, and employee training and development programs. He emphasizes that capital investments will continue stronger than ever in 1993 with spending commitments totaling more than $60 million.
