BANKUNITED IS FULLY OPERATIONAL FOLLOWING FLORIDA HURRICANE
CORAL GABLES, Fla., Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- BankUnited (NASDAQ-NMS: BKUNA), a savings bank serving both coasts of Florida, is fully operational in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew.
There was minimal wind damage to the bank's branches and all are open and operating today. Electricity has been restored at all but one location and that office is working on a generator.
Alfred R. Camner, chairman of BankUnited, stated, "All of our residential mortgage customers have insurance for windstorm, and for flood, if appropriate. In addition, we carry a large master policy to cover any unusual circumstances. Because of this, our operating results will not be materially effected by the severe damage inflicted on a large portion of the Miami area.
"On the human front, our employees were not so lucky. We are assisting those employees who had substantial damage or lost their homes.
"The next step for BankUnited, and other medium-sized financial institutions in the area, is to establish a coordinated program to begin funding the recovery process."
BankUnited is traded on the NASDAQ under the symbol BKUNA.
