 BANKRATER(R) EXPANDS FREE RATING SERVICE
CORAL GABLES, Fla., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Bauer Financial

Reports, Inc., a bank research and rating firm, has expanded its BankRater(R) service that provides free rating information on U.S. banks and thrifts to consumers.
BankRater(R), a service mark of Bauer Financial Reports, Inc., will now provide the following information, free:
-- If your bank is rated two-stars or below, it does not meet, or will not meet if present trends continue, all of the minimum federal regulatory capital requirements, BankRater(R) will provide you with its star rating at no charge.
-- If your bank meets or exceeds all minimum federal regulatory capital requirements but is not a sponsor of this service, BankRater(R) will affirm that it meets minimum regulatory capital requirements, but will not provide its star-rating.
-- If your bank meets or exceeds all minimum federal regulatory capital requirements and is a sponsor of this service, BankRater(R) will provide your bank's actual star-rating and confirm the data with a printed copy.
There is no charge for this service.
Banks and thrifts are rated quarterly on their capitalization and performance. BankRater(R) uses a zero (lowest) to five-star (highest) rating system. Generally speaking, banks and thrifts rated two-stars and below fail to meet, or are projected not to meet, if present trends continue, one or more regulatory capital requirements. Zero rated institutions are usually insolvent.
Institutions that receive a three-star rating meet present regulatory capital requirements. Those receiving a three and a half- star rating meet fully phased in (1994) regulatory requirements. Four-star and five-star rated banks and thrifts significantly exceed the minimum requirements. BankRater(R) recommends five-star and four- star institutions.
"Many well-rated banks and thrifts participate in underwriting this program. Participation, or helping to underwrite the cost of this service, is totally independent of the bank's rating," said Paul A. Bauer, president of the research firm. "Understandably, those banks who have elected to support this program are, nearly universally, the healthiest, best-rated institutions.
"Well-capitalized, healthy banks and thrifts want to advise present and prospective customers of their strength and performance. Since we only provide star-rating information on sponsors...and banks or thrifts that fail to meet regulatory capital requirements, healthy banks are encouraged to support this service," added Bauer.
