BANKING GIANT BACK ON TOP AFTER WILDERNESS YEARS.

Byline: KEN SYMON

The Insider Top500 had a new company in the top spot for the first time in four years. This year saw Royal Bank of Scotland return to the number one position, something the Edinburghbased banking corporate last did in 2009 and which had held until the financial crash hit.

In doing so it climbed up from the third spot last year and from 270th place in the index the year before.

The return to the pinnacle followed what Ross McEwan, its chief executive until he stepped down at the end of October, referred to as one of "the biggest corporate turnarounds in history".

In the calendar year 2018, RBS achieved profits of PS3.36bn, up from the previous figure of PS2.24bn on turnover that fell back to PS15.77bn from PS16.07bn previously.

The year in question also saw the bank's employee numbers fall by three per cent to 67,600, a change that saw its profit per employee figure rise by nearly 55 per cent to PS49,689.

The Gogarburn bank's rise meant that it eased SSE back into second place after the Perth-based energy generator and provider took the premier place for three years in a row.

Of course, the energy group had also fallen back as the company in the index experiencing the biggest drop in turnover - down to PS7.33bn from PS31.22bn previously - with the group's divestment of a number of businesses. It sold its energy services business to Ovo Energy, its telecom business stake and stakes in three onshore windfarms. The group notched up a profit up to PS1.37bn from PS1.08bn last time.

One major event that was to happen in the first quarter of 2019 was the merger of the retail operations of SSE with Npower, which had in fact been called offin December 2018. SSE said it was because of the respective performance of the two businesses, clarity on the final level of the Government's tariffcap and changing energy market conditions.

Bank of Scotland moved up one place to third spot despite its profits and turnover both slipping back in the calendar year 2018. The Edinburgh-headquartered bank's turnover slipped to PS5.96bn from PS6.89bn previously, while the profit was down to PS2.23bn from PS2.80bn.

The bank cut its employee numbers by 7.1 per cent to 31,503, producing a profit per employee of PS70,819, down more than 14 per cent on last time around.

Rising two places to four from last year's six was ScottishPower, a hike that was achieved on profits rising to PS763.50m from PS467.8m previously. This was despite turnover at the Glasgow-based utilities group falling back to just under PS5bn from PS5.24bn previously. The Spanish-owned business saw its employee numbers fall by 6.4 per cent to 5,678 and its profit per employee figure jump by 74.4 per cent to PS134,466.

Completing the top five was Scottish Widows, the life assurance business which was down from second spot last year, with profits down to PS421m from PS1.17bn last time while turnover slumped to PS4.7bn from PS18.19bn last time around, the third biggest turnover drop in this year's index.

While these runners and riders were jostling for higher spots within the index's top 10, two new businesses reached those lofty heights. The first was Repsol Sinopec Resources UK, which came in at number six, having risen from the 17th spot last time around.

The Aberdeen-based oil and gas exploration and production business is a joint venture between Repsol, the Spanish energy company and Addax Petroleum UK Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec Group). It was formed following Repsol's acquisition of the global assets of the former Talisman Energy.

Distilling businesses were at seventh and eighth places, with William Grant & Sons climbing one place to seven on turnover up to PS1.32bn from PS1.19bn, with profit also rising to PS312.82m from just under PS304m previously. Chivas Brothers also climbed one to eight, with the Paisley-based whisky distiller also seeing profits rise to PS442.36m from PS371.01m on turnover up to PS1.16bn from PS107bn last time.

The other entry to the top 10 was Chevron North Sea, which jumped to ninth position from 14th last time around. The Aberdeenbased subsidiary of the American oil giant achieved the ranking on turnover up to PS1.07bn from PS1.03bn last time around and profit up to PS480.6m from PS257.7m previously. The time in the top 10 will, however, be limited after the announcement in November that Israeli business Delek Group announced that it had completed the acquisition of Chevron's North Sea business.

Completing the top 10 was Edinburgh-based Aegon UK. The pensions protection and investment business slipped down from last year's seventh spot after its turnover fell back to PS6.67bn from PS8.412bn previously, with profit also sliding to PS98m in the calendar year 2018 from PS120m the year before.

It was not such a rollercoaster index as the Top500 2019 but there were some dramatic contrasts in positions in the table. Standard Life Aberdeen, which was ranked at number five last time around, (having been in the second top spot in 2018) fell to 259, a drop of 254 places. The Edinburgh-based global investment company saw its turnover fall to PS2.1bn from PS16.98bn previously and it swung to a PS787m loss from a PS964m profit previously.

The company cut 795 jobs, down from 9,114 to 8,319, the highest number of employees axed in this year's index and a fall of 8.7 per cent.

The other company leaving the top 10, although with a drop of a very different proportion, was Weir Group. The Glasgow-headquartered engineering business saw its profits cut to PS86.1m from PS180.6m previously on turnover up to PS2.45bn from PS2.36bn last time.

John Wood Group jumped into the top 20 ranking at 19 up from 267 last time - a rise of 248 places. The Aberdeen-based energy services group's turnover doubled to PS7.89bn from under PS4bn last time around, making it the company in the index showing the biggest turnaround growth in a year. It brought in profits of PS42.13m, compared with a loss of just over PS16m last time around.

But such a dramatic jump in rankings was not the highest, with no fewer than five companies taking a bigger leap up the index over the year, three of which were also energy-related companies. The biggest riser was Aberdeen-based offshore explorer Eland Oil and Gas, whose place rise followed its turnover boosting to PS133.22m from PS51.08m previously. The rise in fortunes also saw its profit and loss move into the black with a profit of PS61.07m compared with a loss of PS11.57m previously.

Plexus Corp UK, the Kelso-based electronics design and manufacture business, jumped 321 places to 118 from 439. The UK wing of the American group was another business that swung to profit from loss, notching up PS58.44m compared with a loss of PS2.67m previously. The company grew its employee numbers by 12.1 per cent to 574 over the year, giving it a profit per employee of PS101,812.

The biggest turnover growth in the whole index was Castle Water, the Blairgowrie-headquartered independent water retailer, which entered the index with a remarkable 2355 per cent plus rise in turnover. It grew to PS439.57m from PS17.9m previously while profit rose to PS6.95m from PS1.05m. Employee numbers also rose by more than 137 per cent to number 252, with profit per employee seeing a jump by 178.4 per cent to PS27,579.

There is only one business in the Insider Top500 index that was in our SME300 rankings in November 2019: 3B Construction. The company, ranked at 402 this time, leapt all the way up from 266th in the secondary ranking. The Newton Stewart-based housebuilding projects business achieved a more than doubling of turnover - up to PS25.6m from PS11.95m previously, earning profits PS2.63m up from PS70,000 last time around.

The firm's expansion had seen it boost its employee numbers by more than 28 per cent to 158. The crane hire business has a depot in Ayr in addition to its Newton Stewart main base.

Going the other way, the biggest rank faller in the index was Livingston-based technology business WL Gore & Associates, which tumbled 367 places from 91 down to 458. The American-owned company's turnover slumped to PS53.92m from PS98.80m while it slewed into the red with a loss of PS9.94m compared with a profit previously of PS21.67m.

Alliance Trust suffered the second biggest rank loss, falling to 468 from 127 last time, a fall of 341 places. The Dundee-based investment trust business swung into the red, reporting a PS136.61m loss compared with a profit of PS49.63m previously, following turnover drop to PS55.15m from PS60.53m previously. The change in fortunes did not impact on employee numbers - the business had 272 members of staff, the same as the previous year.

This year's index is without some previously well-known names because they have ceased trading, at least in their previous form. Notable among these is Havelock Europa, the Kirkcaldy-based shopfitting and educational furniture group, whose shares were suspended at the end of June 2018 and which went into administration some days later.

Another formerly listed business that went was Edinburgh-based Johnston Press, the publisher of The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday newspapers among many others.

The company filed for administration in November 2018 and was acquired by its bondholders to form JPI Media in a pre-pack administration deal. However, as I write, the group is set to be taken over in a race that has seen different frontrunners as the weeks pass.

Border Cars Group, the Dumfries-headquartered group that was one of the biggest motor dealers in southern Scotland and Cumbria, went into administration in July 2019, ending 42 years of trading.

The Dundee-based building services group McGill & Co went into administration in February 2019 with the loss of 374 jobs. Catalus Energy Investments subsequently bought the business out of administration the following month and put in a new management team to take the business forward.

An analysis of ownership shows that the vast numbers of companies are Scottish-owned - 330 or 66 per cent, with 47 or 9.4 per cent owned elsewhere in the UK.

The third biggest country of ownership is the US, with 40, or eight per cent of businesses, in the index.

France has 13 companies or 2.6 per cent of the Top500, Japan has nine or 1.8 per cent and Norway and the Netherlands have seven each. Canada and Germany have five businesses each and other countries fewer than five.

Family businesses, of which there were 169 in this year's index - three up on last year - had a total turnover of PS30.6bn, up more than 21 per cent on last year's PS25.2bn.

Pre-tax profit of these businesses was even more in positive territory being at PS1.59bn or nearly 29 per cent on last year's PS1.24bn. The total number of employees of those companies at 132,337 was 13.55 per cent down on last year's 153,081, contributing to a higher profit per employee figure of PS12,032, up nearly 49 per cent on last year's PS8,082.

There were 328 non-family businesses in this year's Top500 with a combined turnover of PS93.28bn, down nearly 36 per cent on last year's PS145.65bn. Total pre-tax profit also fell to PS7.85bn but showed a much smaller drop, less than three per cent down on last year's PS8.08bn total.

There was only a marginal fall in the number of employees which, at 428,540, was only 0.71 per cent down on last time's 431,586 - while profit per employee fell 2.2 per cent to PS18,310 from last year's PS18,723. | RANK COMPANY NAME ACTIVITY LOCATION COUNTRY OF TURNOVER PSM PROFIT PSM EMPLOYEES No. PROFIT PER EMP PS YEAR 20 19 OWNERSHIP PRESENT PREVIOUS PRESENT PREVIOUS PRESENT CHANGE% PRESENT
