BANC ONE AND CARENETWORK INTRODUCE NEW HEALTHCARE PAYMENT SYSTEM
Medical Credit Card to be Tested
COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- BANC ONE CORPORATION (NYSE: ONE) and CareNetwork, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRNT) announced today plans for a new healthcare payment system that will be piloted with patients of CareNetwork, Inc., the parent company for Wisconsin Health
Organization Insurance Corp., Milwaukee. The system will automate health claims and payments between doctors, insurance companies and patients, reducing paper intensive operations and providing added convenience and efficiency to all parties.
The system will be one of the first in the nation to provide electronic transfer of both patient information and payments. In the test, a group of Wisconsin Health Organization HMO enrollees will be provided with plastic cards that will be used in terminals in their doctors' office, similar to a point-of-sale credit card device today. Through the terminals, doctors will be provided with information about an enrollee's insurance eligibility, deductible status and co-payment amount. Following an enrollee's visit, the doctor will enter in the claim information and automatically send the claim to the insurance company for payment. Through the healthcare payment system, all participating providers will receive their payments electronically and enrollees will receive statements informing them of the completed healthcare transactions.
The new healthcare payment system will be piloted with CareNetwork starting in the fourth quarter of 1992. After the test, it is expected to be made available to health care agencies across the country.
"This system is another example of BANC ONE's innovation and leadership in technology and service. It builds upon our card processing and point-of-sale network capabilities," stated John B. McCoy, chairman and chief executive officer, BANC ONE CORPORATION. "We believe this is the healthcare payment system of the future and feel we have a solid partner with CareNetwork."
Kipton Kaplan, president and chief executive officer of CareNetwork, Inc., said that "claim filing, billing and collecting are enormous tasks for our subscribers and doctors. This new system will reduce both expenses and time, making our services not only more efficient but also more effective.
"We wanted to be the first to provide this advanced type of service to our subscribers, doctors and employers," Kaplan added. "We have been working on this project for several years, and believe that BANC ONE and CareNetwork make the perfect team to introduce this service to our current and future markets."
The healthcare payment system is being developed by Bank One, Milwaukee, Banc One Services Corporation and Bank One, Dayton, Ohio. Bank One, Milwaukee will manage the sales and marketing of the project. Bank One, Dayton will provide cardholder and provider servicing and manage credit approvals and collections. Banc One Services Corporation will develop the processing and software to link the complex network.
"This Medical Credit Card will be a major advance in a number of ways, such as faster verification of our patients' health insurance coverage as well as significantly reducing the mass of paperwork we now have to produce when filing claims," said Dr. Edwin Montgomery, Jr., a member of the WHO physician network and the CareNetwork board of directors. "The benefits of the new system will positively address these and many other situations now facing physicians and their patients."
