BALTIMORE GAS AND ELECTRIC COMPANY AUTHORIZED REVENUE INCREASE OF $84.9 MILLION FOR ELECTRIC AND $1.6 MILLION FOR GAS

BALTIMORE, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Today the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) authorized a gross annual revenue increase of $84.9 million for electric and $1.6 million for gas service for the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (NYSE: BGE).
The company filed for authority to increase its electric rates by $163.8 million but was granted $84.9 million. Only $1.6 million of the $5.6 million request to increase gas rates was granted. The revenue increase was due primarily to changes in retirement benefit accounting, increased costs and the effects of inflation. BG&E has not had an electric increase since 1990 or a gas increase since 1991.
As a result of today's final order, the total electric bill for the average residential customer will increase approximately 5.8 percent. A residential gas customer's total bill will increase less than 1 percent. This case does not affect the fuel adjustment or the actual cost of gas adjustments (PGA) on a customer's bill.
The PSC also reduced BG&E's return on equity by determining that it should be set at 11.75 percent. The company asked for 12.87 percent. The commission determined that 9.40 percent was a reasonable overall rate of return. BG&E sought a rate of return of 9.89 percent.
