BALLY'S HEALTH & TENNIS TEAMS UP WITH NATIONAL HANDICAPPED SPORTS TO HELP TRAIN DISABLED ATHLETES; FITNESS CENTERS SERVE AS TRAINING SITES
CHICAGO, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Bally's Health & Tennis Corporation has made its fitness centers available as training sites for disabled athletes in preparation for the 1992 Summer Paralympic Games in Barcelona, through its agreement with National Handicapped Sports (NHS), the company recently announced.
In preparation for the National Amputee Summer Games recently held in Atlanta and the IX Summer Paralympic Games to be held in Barcelona, Sept. 4-15, Bally's Health & Tennis has made its more than 300 facilities across the nation available to National Handicapped Sports athletes participating in the games. There they can exercise on the most modern equipment and train with their coaches.
"Our support of National Handicapped Sports underscores Bally's commitment to health and fitness for all Americans," said Bally Manufacturing Corporation Chairman and CEO Arthur M. Goldberg.
"The United States Olympic Team made a terrific showing in Barcelona just weeks ago. Our goal is to help the top physically disabled athletes in the U.S. make a repeat performance in Barcelona. As the official training facility for National Handicapped Sports athletes, we realize how much the right training facilities and the best coaching can make a difference at the finish line," said Don Wildman, CEO of Bally's Health & Tennis Corporation.
Approximately 5,000 athletes from over 92 countries will be participating in the Paralympic Games in Barcelona. The United States will be represented by nearly 400 athletes -- some of whom successfully competed in the National Amputee Summer Games conducted by NHS in Atlanta in late July.
"The National Amputee Summer Olympic Games were the final competition before the Paralympic Games and a great testing ground to select the best of the best disabled athletes. Bally's has been instrumental in helping our athletes gear up for what may be the toughest athletic competition of their lives," said Kirk Bauer, executive director of National Handicapped Sports.
