BALL PACKAGING PRODUCTS CANADA PLANS CLOSURE OF
 MONTREAL METAL CAN MANUFACTURING FACILITY
MUNCIE, Ind., June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Ball Corporation's (NYSE: BLL) Ball Packaging Products Canada subsidiary will close its Montreal, Quebec food and tobacco can manufacturing facility before year-end.
Approximately 175 employees work in the Montreal plant, 50 of which are expected to be given an opportunity to transfer to the company's Baie d'Urfe, Quebec manufacturing plant.
William A. Lincoln, executive vice president of Ball Corporation and president and chief executive officer of the Canadian subsidiary, said continued competitive pressures on the market for metal cans throughout North America, coupled with high operating costs of the 88- year old Montreal facility, "left us with no alternative other than to close the plant. The decision was a difficult one and was reached only after a comprehensive evaluation of the Quebec and Eastern Canada marketplace."
Contingent on approval of certain financing agreements by Quebec government agencies, selected can manufacturing assets from the Montreal plant will be reinstalled in the company's newer Baie d'Urfe facility. Lincoln said preferential hiring consideration will be given to former Montreal plant employees for positions created by the transfer of some of the Montreal manufacturing process equipment.
Ball Canada produces metal container products for food, beverage and soft drink markets and operates six other manufacturing plants in Canada.
