BALL CORPORATION SLATES CLOSING OF GLASS CONTAINER PLANTS IN
SANTA ANA, CALIF., SAND SPRINGS, OKLA.
MUNCIE, Ind., June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Ball Corporation's (NYSE:BLL) glass container manufacturing subsidiary, Ball-InCon Glass Packaging Corp., will close its manufacturing facilities in Santa Ana, Calif. and Sand Springs, Okla. later this year, the company reported today.
The plants to be closed each operate a single furnace with four and five glass container production lines, respectively. Approximately 300 people are employed at each facility.
Customer requirements from the closed facilities will be fulfilled at Ball-InCon's 14 other manufacturing locations. The company said it did not expect to record any charge to earnings for the quarter or year as a result of this action.
"We reached this decision only after careful consideration," said H. Ray Looney, Ball group vice president and president and chief executive officer of Ball-InCon. "It is not feasible, from an economic and competitive standpoint, to keep these two plants running." Looney said the company was implementing programs to assist affected employees in their search for other employment.
Ball-InCon is the nation's largest producer of glass containers for the food industry and the third largest producer of commercial glass bottles and jars overall. More than 800 customers are served from its other glass container manufacturing plants in California, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Washington.
Ball Corporation is a manufacturing company with principal interests in packaging products sold to customers in the food and beverage industries. The company also provides aerospace systems, professional services and industrial products to government and commercial customers. The company had sales last year of $2.3 billion.
