BALCHEM: ENCAPSULATED VITAMIN FOR AGRICULTURE

 BALCHEM: ENCAPSULATED VITAMIN FOR AGRICULTURE
 SLATE HILL, N.Y., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Balchem Corp.

(NASDAQ: BLCC) today issued the following statement:
Our usual quarterly bulletin is being sent early to tell you something about a development that could become significant for Balchem. However, as this project is sensitive to advance publicity, we cannot provide information that would compromise our position in the market.
We have been collaborating with another organization for almost five years on a new product which would have a benefit to a segment of the agriculture industry. Our collaborator is a major supplier to this industry. Its sales in 1991 exceeded $2 billion. Balchem intends to manufacture and sell the new product to its marketing associate for subsequent resale in North America. We are drafting a sales and manufacturing agreement for this project.
The product involves an encapsulated vitamin for animal consumption; the process can insure the vitamin is digested in a beneficial manner.
Our encapsulated product has been thoroughly tested (and further testing continues), not only by our collaborator, but also by an independent university under the auspices of our marketing associate. The desired effect has been confirmed at very high statistical levels of assurance. But it would be premature to estimate the potential sales of the product. Our preliminary, conservative estimates indicate that this project could have a significant effect on Balchem's sales and earnings, beginning in the second half of this year or early next year.
Balchem has adequate production capacity to handle the introductory phase of the product. It is likely that the volume will eventually exceed our present capacity, but no difficulty is expected in adding new facilities as they are needed.
A worldwide market is certainly possible. However, extensive testing will be required to develop each segment of this market. A decision as to when and how we will approach additional markets is being deferred until we have more information on results in North America.
