BALANCE OF BELLEVUE STORE REOPENS SUNDAY, FRED MEYER SAYS
PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Fred Meyer (NASDAQ: MEYR) will reopen the rest of its Bellevue store at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6, after reinforcing more than 100 hanger assemblies in the roof of the nonfood area of the store, the company announced today.
The city completed inspecting the work earlier this week, and employees began restocking shelves.
The nonfood areas of the Bellevue store has been closed since Monday, July 27, when a portion of the roof collapsed.
The Bellevue Fred Meyer store is comprised of two separate buildings, built at different times by different companies, and leased to Fred Meyer in 1975 to create a single store. The damage occurred in the building that houses the store's nonfood products. The failure of a hanger assembly caused one 51-foot wood beam to fall, which opened a hole in the roof and damaged other hanger assemblies.
Subsequent inspection of the store resulted in the development of a three-phase program to repair all damage caused by the accident and reinforce the roof support structure of the entire nonfood building to assure safety and meet the current uniform building code requirements.
Phase I involved reopening the building that houses most of the food department on Aug. 5. A thorough inspection of that building showed it to be structurally sound and that all beams and beam hangers were safe.
Phase II primarily focused on repairing the area of the store damaged by the fallen beam, including the service bakery, service fish and service deli sections of the food department and the tenant areas inside the east entrance where the beam fell. In addition, the two tenants just inside the west entrance were included in the Phase II reopening on Aug. 23.
Phase III involved reinforcing all remaining support beam hanger assemblies in the nonfood portion of the Belleuve store. Rapid progress on this phase of the project enabled the remainder of the store to open nearly two weeks earlier than originally planned.
