BAKER ELECTED NLUS SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT

 SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Evan Smith Baker, director of business development and planning at GTE Government Systems Corporation, was elected senior vice president of the Navy League of the United States. He was elected by the league's national board of directors during its annual winter meeting held here in San Jose Nov. 13-16.
 The new senior vice president is expected to succeed William C. Kelley Jr. as national president of the Navy League. The transition is expected to take place at the NLUS 1993 National Convention June 4-9 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Washington.
 Baker has been a member of the Navy League for 30 years -- serving as national director, national assistant treasurer, region president, and president of the District of Columbia Council. He has served as a national vice president for the past four years. He is a recipient of several awards including the Mackie Award, the National President's Awards, and the Secretary of the Navy's Meritorious and Superior Public Service Awards.
 A 1956 graduate of Tufts University, where he studied on an NROTC Scholarship, Baker served in the U.S. Navy until 1962 where he attained the rank of Lieutenant and was submarine qualified.
 A native of East Orange, N.J., Baker and his wife Beverly currently reside in Saratoga, Calif. They have one son, Mark.
 Founded in 1902, the Navy League of the United States is a 71,000-member organization that works to educate the American public on the importance of sea power. To that end, members engage in activities supportive of the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and U.S.-Flag Merchant Marine.
