BAKER & MCKENZIE OPENS VIETNAM OFFICES; FIRST OFFICIAL LICENSE GRANTED TO FOREIGN FIRM TO ESTABLISH OWN OFFICES

CHICAGO, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Baker & McKenzie, the leading global law firm, today announced that it is the first foreign law firm to be granted an official license by the Vietnamese government to establish its own representative offices in Vietnam's two largest cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The fully staffed Baker & McKenzie offices officially opened for business Monday, Jan. 10, having received the requisite approvals from both the United States and Vietnamese governments.
"We appreciate the confidence that the Vietnamese government has demonstrated in expeditiously handling our application, and the distinction which this gives Baker & McKenzie as the first foreign law firm to become officially established in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City," John McGuigan, Baker & McKenzie's chairman, commented.
McGuigan went on to say, "For years Baker & McKenzie has been very active in all parts of the Asia Pacific region, representing many leading companies. This experience, when coupled with our extensive general knowledge of Vietnam and our new offices there, will enable us to better serve our clients and help them take advantage of the exciting business opportunities in Vietnam."
Two attorneys, Nguyen Tan Hai and Mark Lockwood, who both have extensive regional experience, will lead the firm's client efforts in Vietnam. Mr. Nguyen graduated from Saigon Law School in 1971 and practiced in Vietnam. In 1988, he earned a law degree from Melbourne University in Australia and was admitted to practice in Victoria. Mr. Nguyen has been based in Hong Kong, working in the Baker & McKenzie office, before returning to Vietnam.
Lockwood also has extensive regional experience and has spent the past six years serving Baker & McKenzie client needs from Hong Kong. He earned his law degree from Monash University in Australia and is qualified to practice in both Victoria and Hong Kong.
"Establishing offices in Vietnam was a natural course for us to take because of our large and growing Asia Pacific business. We have a very strong base in the region and represent numerous clients who are interested in the new business opportunities available in Vietnam as it opens up," McGuigan said.
