BAD BLOOD; Tragedy kills 2,000.

Byline: By EMILY COOK, Health Correspondent

MORE than 2,000 haemophilia sufferers died after being treated with infected blood, a public inquiry heard yesterday.

The scandal of how patients received blood with HIV and Hepatitis C 20 years ago has been described as the worst treatment disaster in NHS history. Many of those who survived are now terminally ill. Victims and patients gave harrowing accounts of their suffering.

Nurse Carol Grayson, 47, from Newcastle has led the campaign after her partner Peter Longstaff died in 2005. She accused US firms supplying blood of using "skid row" donors.

The hearing was adjourned.
